It was five years ago on this day when LSO Deputy Troy Bailey died after suffering a heart attack three days before.  To mark the anniversary of his death, Bailey’s name has now been engraved of the Law Enforcement Memorial Wall outside the Hall of Justice in downtown Lincoln.

Sheriff Terry Wagner says it was a long road to get Bailey’s name engraved on that wall.  “It took quite awhile to get his death ruled as a line of duty death.  It wasn’t your normal line of duty death,” Wagner says.  “Once that was done then, his name was added to the memorial walls in Washington and Grand Island.”

LSO says the 53-year-old Bailey and a second deputy responded to a home to serve a protection order to a known convicted felon.  The protection order required that the felon be removed from the home.

The sheriff’s office says after almost an hour, the deputies were able to remove the confrontational felon from the home. Already under emotional stress from the line of duty death of Lincoln Police Officer Mario Herrera the day prior, Bailey completed his shift and went home where he later collapsed.

Wagner says Bailey was transported to the hospital and treated for a myocardial infarction.  He died three days later on September 11, 2020.  “Everybody still talks about Troy,” Wagner says. “Just a great co-worker, great guy and we lost him way to early.”
