28-year-old Joesef Barraza has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder and rape of 23-year-old Carly Schaaf, along with the rapes of two other women.
KLIN media partner 10/11 NOW reports Lancaster County District Judge Lori Maret handed down the sentence Thursday, adding 120 to 150 years for three counts of first-degree sexual assault. Barraza received no credit for time served.
A jury convicted Barraza in June of killing Schaaf, who prosecutors said was drugged and sexually assaulted at his home on May 17, 2021, before dying from acute intoxication and suffocation. Barraza later dumped her body at Pawnee Lake with help from his then-girlfriend, 29-year-old Rachel Pageler, and his brother, 20-year-old Danyl Barraza.
Pageler pleaded guilty to her role in disposing of Schaaf’s body and will be sentenced Oct. 2. Danyl is charged as an accessory to murder. Prosecutors said he has cooperated in the case against his brother and will be offered a plea deal Monday that could reduce his charges and carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
