There was a homecoming in Lincoln Tuesday afternoon. The 45 members of Nebraska Task Force One returned after a grueling 14-day search and rescue mission along the Guadalupe River in Central Texas, which was devastated by deadly flooding on July 4.
The team, including two canines, left for Texas on July 7. Coby Werner with Omaha Fire says digging through the large debris piles along the river in the Texas heat were the biggest challenges they faced.
“When we first got there the conditions everything along the Guadalupe River was complete devastation.” Werner says the area they had to search covered several miles. “In and out of water, we were doing wide area searches and we provided some swift water rescue, utilizing the boats.”
Werner says they worked closely in conjunction with the Texas task force and the local emergency managers” He hopes their efforts helped bring closure to families who lost loved ones, including children.
