Lincoln Police have released the results of a traffic enforcement project in April that focused on distracted driving. The project was part of the national “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” safety initiative in which officers worked overtime to identify speed and red light violations, the top two traffic infractions committed by distracted drivers.
LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says 400 traffic stops were made and nearly 500 citations were issued. She says 198 drivers were cited for speeding and 116 for no registration. Officers also ticketed 50 people for not wearing seatbelts, 34 for no insurance and 16 for running red lights.
There were 56 other citations issued for a variety of traffic infractions. The project made possible by a grant from our safety partners at the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office.
Results of the enforcement campaign don’t include citations written by officers during normal shifts.
