The first road trip of the season for Nebraska women’s basketball was a success.

At The Dana on Mission Bay Holiday Tournament in San Diego Friday, the Huskers overcame a slow start to beat Drexel (4-2) 65-53.

Nebraska got a big boost from sophomore Jaz Shelley, who dropped a career-high 30 points. Shelley made 8-of-9 shots in the game, including 6-of-7 3s.

As Shelley shouldered the scoring, Bella Cravens and Alexis Markowski combined for 23 rebounds to keep the Dragons off the glass.

The Huskers hit 43.9 percent of their shots and 9-of-25 of the 3s.

In the championship game Saturday, Nebraska saw a familiar face. Leading the Toreros of San Diego (4-2) was former Nebraska assistant coach Cindy Fisher.

Nebraska again dropped behind early, but took control in the second quarter to lead 27-20 at the half. That lead shrunk to just one after the third.

Leading 53-52 with 4:35 to go, Shelley drilled a triple to start Nebraska on 11-4 run to close out the game. The Huskers won 64-56 to stay undefeated.

A trio of Huskers scored in double-figures, including Shelley (16), Sam Haiby (15), and Ashley Scoggin (12).

Nebraska shot a season-low 39.2 percent from the field, but managed to make 10-of-19 3s. The Huskers also committed a season-high 23 turnovers.

The 7-0 start is the best since 2014-15. Only three teams in program history have started better: 1992-93, 8-0; 1997-97, 9-0; 2009-10, 30-0.

Nebraska returns home Wednesday to face Wake Forest (7-0) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
