Lincoln Transportation and Utilities is gearing up for a potential winter storm this weekend that could drop 4 to 6 inches of snow in Lincoln Saturday, January 4, and Sunday, January 5. LTU says their crews are out today applying brine to arterial, bus and school.

“We’ll have that anti ice brine down on the pavement so that when winter weather does come into our city, we’ve got that first layer down to help prevent bonding so that we can better and more efficiently remove any snow buildup that comes in,” said Tim Byrne, LTU Maintenance Operations and Fleet Services Manager. “Crews will prioritize plowing emergency, school, and bus routes through the storm. We will continue to evaluate conditions throughout the storm to determine if parking bans and residential plowing will be needed.”

All routes are expected to be completed by 4:00 this afternoon.  A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from noon Saturday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Byrne said winter operation crews are working in advance of the storm and will plow around the clock if necessary to maintain Lincoln’s streets.

“We’re asking everybody to employ their winter driving skills. Think ahead, use some common sense on the road, leave yourself additional travel time to get to your destination, and leave additional stopping distance between you and other vehicles so that you don’t crowd them in their workspace,” Byrne added. “Keep an eye on the weather too. We may see some subarctic wind chills that can create some additional problems for motorists.”

The storm could also produce wind gusts up to 26 mph and light icing.

Residents are reminded to shovel sidewalks and around fire hydrants and mailboxes by 9 a.m. the day following the snowstorm. To reduce the amount of snow pushed back into driveways during plowing, the City recommends shoveling snow 6 feet to the left of your driveway’s edge.
