Last Thursday, Dec. 19th, a warrant amnesty event was held by the City of Lincoln and Lancaster County. Following the event, Lancaster County District Attorney Pat Condon says this year’s “Warrant Wipeout” nullified over 80 arrest warrants.
“There were about 83 cases that got pulled, That includes city and county warrants,” Condon told KLIN News. “It was a pretty good turnout this year.”
The timing of this annual warrant amnesty day is to give individuals with qualifying misdemeanor arrest warrants an opportunity to have their warrants cleared without having to be taken into custody over the holidays, while also getting their case back on track in the court system.
The event does not dismiss the underlying charges or crimes associated with the warrant. It only cancels the arrest warrant, giving individuals an opportunity to address their court cases without fear of immediate arrest.
Last year, the warrant wipeout event was a “huge success,” with over 120 arrest warrants nullified, and the event running nearly 90 minutes past its originally scheduled end time.
