Huskers to open 2025 season in KC

By Nate Rohr Dec 16, 2024 | 12:09 PM

The University of Nebraska, the University of Cincinnati and the Kansas City Chiefs jointly announced Monday that the 2025 football season opener between the Bearcats and Huskers will take place at Geha Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Aug. 28. The game was originally scheduled as a Cincinnati home game, then moved to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis before ultimately ending up at Arrowhead.

The kickoff time and television network will be determined at a later date, as part of the Big 12’s television package, as the game still remains a UC home game.

“We are pleased to partner with the University of Cincinnati and the Kansas City Chiefs to bring our 2025 season-opening matchup to Arrowhead Stadium,” Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said in a release. “Since arriving at Nebraska, one constant message I have heard from our fans is they miss having road football games that are within driving distance. This game offers an excellent opportunity for our great fan base to make a short trip to watch the Huskers open the season and enjoy Labor Day weekend in Kansas City.”

The game will be the Huskers’ third all-time at the home of the Chiefs, which opened in 1972. In 1998, a goal-line stand in the final seconds propelled Nebraska to a victory over Oklahoma State. In 2006, Oklahoma defeated the Huskers in the Big 12 Championshp on a frigid Dec. night in mid-America. This game will be played on Thursday night, as the Kansas City Royals are home for a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers just across the parking lot Friday, Aug. 29.

Tickets for the Nebraska-Cincinnati contest will go on sale this week. All tickets will be sold online at www.chiefs.com/tickets/ and www.ticketmaster.com. No tickets will be sold through the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office.

Nebraska and Cincinnati season ticket holders will receive the first opportunity to purchase tickets, beginning on Tuesday, at 9 a.m. A public on-sale for tickets will begin on Wednesday at 10 a.m.   More details on ticket information will be communicated to Nebraska season ticket holders today in advance of the Tuesday pre-sale.
