No. 24 Nebraska women’s basketball rode a near double-double from Alexis Markowski and stifling defense to defeat Chattanooga, 66-42, Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Markowski, a senior from Lincoln, led all scorers with 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds. Callin Hake added 10 points and five rebounds.
But the star of the afternoon may have been Nebraska’s (10-1) stifling defense. NU held the Mocs (4-8) to just 34 percent shooting overall and just 21 percent from behind the arc. Ava Card and Caia Elisaldez both scored 10, but the rest of the Chattanooga roster only mustered 22 points. The Cornhuskers were especially opportunistic, converting 18 Mocs turnovers into 27 points, while Chattanooga converted 12 Nebraska turnovers into just seven points.
The Huskers led throughout, holding a 14-11 lead through one quarter, a 29-20 edge at half and a 44-30 lead through three quarters. Nebraska ended the game on a 7-0 run to close out the Mocs.
Nebraska now has six days before its last game before Christmas, a Saturday tilt at Georgia Tech at 4:30 p.m.
