By Chase Porter Nov 12, 2024 | 3:54 PM

The 28-year-old Chicago man who stabbed a police officer at a north Lincoln bus depot in October of 2023 has been found guilty of second-degree assault on an officer and use a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

As reported by KLIN media partner 1011 Now, according to court documents filed Tuesday, Simon Kafka faces up to 50 years in prison for each charge. As part of a plea deal, the judge dismissed one charge of attempted second-degree murder and one for resisting arrest using a deadly weapon.

On October 17, 2023, LPD was called to the bus depot near 52nd and Superior Street around 12:15 a.m. when Kafka refused to get off the bus and had no ticket.

When officers encountered Kafka in the back of the bus, he began fighting with the officers and lunged at one with a knife, stabbing him in the neck. Police Chief Michon Morrow say Kafka then tried to grab the officer’s gun and was shot once by the second officer.

After being released from the hospital, Kafka was booked in Lancaster County Jail

Morrow says the injured officer was also taken to a hospital and treated for their injuries.

Kafka will be sentenced in Lancaster County District Court on December 20th.
