Two Lincoln Police officers responded to a fire alarm at 8th and ‘N’ Street just before midnight Saturday.  Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says while they were, several fights broke out in the intersection and involved about 30 people.

“One officer deployed OC spray and attempted to take a man into custody,” Thomas says.  “While doing so, an unknown female in her 20s wearing a red tank top and jean shorts swung at the officer, striking the left side of his face with a closed palm.”

Thomas says another officer working to break up a separate fight was hit and kicked in the head several times.  During the fights an officer’s body-worn camera and a sidearm magazine were knocked from their vest.  Thomas says someone picked up the camera and took off.  “A search led to the recovery of the camera in a nearby trash compactor. The magazine was not located.”

After police were able to disperse most of the crowd, officers learned a man with a gun was man be in the area. “He was located and began to jog away,” Thomas says. “Officers directed him to stop, he complied with instructions and was taken into custody.”

A loaded handgun was located on the ground where the suspect was apprehended.  he was booked for disturbing the peace and refusing to comply with an officer’s order.  Neither officer needed to be hospitalized.
