No one was harmed after the Secretary of State Elections Division office received a suspicious envelope Monday morning.

Staff noticed the item and became suspicious during a routine mail collection. As the unopened envelope was isolated to a separate area. Staff immediately contacted Nebraska State Patrol who coordinated with other authorities to come investigate the item.

During their investigation authorities identified a substance in the envelope, which was tested and found to be non-hazardous. The envelope has been turned over to the FBI and Postal Service authorities.

No one was harmed during the handling of the envelope and subsequent investigation.

The Elections Division has notified county election offices advising them to be aware of suspicious mail and to use extra precaution.

“The situation was quickly and safely resolved thanks to the swift action taken by our staff members, law enforcement and other first responders,” said Secretary of State Bob Evnen in an official statement.
