Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the Lincoln Correctional Center at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday after a fire was intentionally set in a cell. Smoke forced the evacuation of 16 inmates and two staff members in one quadrant of the affected housing unit.
Three staff members went to the hospital to be evaluated. The inmate accused of starting the fire went to the hospital. One of the staff members was admitted for treatment due to smoke exposure. The inmate remains hospitalized.
Department of Correctional Services officials say the preliminary investigation shows the fire was intentionally set by the inmate using a TV cord.
Results of the investigation will be provided to the county attorney to determine what charges will be filed.
