The new Lincoln and Lancaster County Law Enforcement Memorial was dedicated Sunday. The memorial is located at the City-County Building on 10th Street. The memorial features life-sized statues of officers kneeling in front of walls that has the names of fallen officers from the Lincoln Police Department and Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
Police Chief Teresa Ewins says the memorial gives people a chance to honor and remember those who gave their lives for the community. “Today it goes unsaid that the lives taken from us have impacted all of those here today. The greatest recognition for those who gave their lives for this community is by remembering them and their sacrifice.”
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird also spoke at the dedication ceremony. “When one of the men and women who protect all of us gives their life in the line of duty, our entire community feels that loss. We feel that loss for a very long time.”
The names of seven police officers and three sheriff’s deputies are on the memorial. All ten of them were killed or died in the line of duty. Family members of the fallen officers were on hand for the dedication.
