Lincoln Police have released results from their Back-to-School Traffic Safety Project. Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says from August 347 traffic stops were conducted near school zones across the city from August 12-30 and 239 speeding citations were issued.
“The highest speed violation was 32 MPH over the posted limit,” Thomas says. “So it shows that our efforts are working and there is a need for our officers to be out there.” Officers also reported the highest speed observed and stopped each day, which averaged 18 MPH above the posted limit.
Officers also wrote 44 seatbelt citations and cited 50 drivers for no registration. The enforcement effort was funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety
Office.
The project provided overtime for officers to focus on traffic enforcement around Lincoln schools.
