The Lincoln area is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:00 this afternoon. There have been reports of wind gusts of nearly 80 miles an hour in some parts of the city and there is the potential for quarter sized hail along with the heavy rain and strong winds.
There have also been reports of tree limbs down across Lincoln and flickering electrical outages. Nearly 2,3oo LES customers were without park as of 5:00 p.m.
Lincoln/Lancaster County is also under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00 PM tonight. This advisory comes in tandem with grueling heat index values ranging from 100 to 115 in the area, persisting into the evening.
The National Weather Service reports strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into the evening, primarily from 5 pm through 11 pm. The primary hazards will be damaging winds and large hail. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
There is a 60-80% chance of any thunderstorms in the risk area – 15-30% chance of an individual storm being severe.
This could be an impactful event with wind gusts 75 mph or greater possible.
