Lincoln Northeast High School faced criticism after trophies and awards from the 1980s were found discarded in a dumpster near by the school.

KLIN media partner 1011 Now reports, an anonymous Facebook post in a Northeast High Alumni Group sparked outrage among former students.

“Can’t imagine why someone within the administration couldn’t have contacted people about any of this those football pads could have been used by some small town team or under privilege youth team somewhere,” one alumni said.

“Throwing out championship trophies that alums would cherish is a terrible move,” said another former student.

The photo of discarded accolades, shared anonymously to a Facebook group for alumni of Lincoln’s Northeast Highschool.

Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman apologized, explaining that the awards had been stored under the school’s pool but were discarded for a pool renovation.

“The way we handled this was not proper, we could’ve done better, the community deserves for us to do better and we will be better,” Dr. Gausman said.

In the future, LPS will collect surplus trophies and plaques and offer them up for auction. Dr. Gausman also mentioned that Northeast Principal Keri Applebee is working on displaying past honors digitally and cataloging past yearbooks.
