Severe weather potential returns this weekend for Lincoln-Lancaster County.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Brennen Darrah tells KLIN News says a weaker cold front is going to push moisture in the area to the south, which will return Sunday.

“We’re looking at the potential for scattered thunderstorms to develop as early as around noon on Sunday, especially by mid-afternoon,” said Darrah. “Thunderstorms developing in south central Nebraska will move into southeast Nebraska for the late afternoon, evening hours.”

Chances of strong storms on are high, especially south of Interstate 80 according to Darrah. Potential hazards primarily include large hail (possibly up to golf ball, tennis ball sized), strong storms, and a low level tornado risk.

The severe weather threat does extend all the way into Tuesday afternoon. Monday may be similar to Sunday, but Darrah says it too soon to say. Tuesday is also presenting all the necessary elements for more severe weather.

“The biggest thing that I can stress is making sure you have a way to get severe weather warnings whenever we issue them,” said Darrah. “Tornado sirens are primarily to alert people that are outdoors that don’t have access to phones or weather radio… so if you’re going to be in a building, make sure you have a weather radio, you’re watching your local news station, and have your phone set up to get weather alerts.”
