Now that spring has sprung the possibility of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes increases.  Next week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Nebraska and Lancaster County Emergency Management Director Jim Davidsaver says the big message is preparation.

“A good start is to identify your best shelter options at home, work and school when severe weather poses a threat,” Davidsaver says  “Your family plan should include a location where all family members will report during severe weather.”

Davidsaver says while tornadoes can happen any time of the year and any time of the day, historically April, May and June have the most tornado activity.  As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the National Weather Service will issue a  Statewide Tornado Drill at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27th

Davidsaver says he will activate the county’s outdoor warning sirens at that time.  Everyone is encouraged to review and practice their sheltering plans for severe weather.  To track participation in the drill,   he says a simple on-line form is available on the Emergency Management website for people to fill out once they complete their shelter drill.
