Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday.  As you turn your clocks forward, Lincoln Fire and Rescue Public Information officer MJ Lierman says don’t forget to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

“Get those batteries ready, get those new ten year lithium smoke detectors,” Lierman says.   “We would still like you to test the smoke detectors when you move your clocks forward.”  Lierman says they respond to many house fires where there are no working detectors.

“Sometimes those older homes they may not have working smoke detectors at all,” Lierman says.  “It’s a really simple thing to have.  You have much more time to get out of the house, especially at night, when you are alerted by the smoke detectors.”

She recommends installing one detector on each floor, one in each sleeping area and in hallway areas. For smoke alarms with a non-replaceable battery, replace the entire smoke alarm if it begins chirping.

Also make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are in working order. If you can’t afford one, contact LFR and they will provide you with one.
