The news agency Axos is reporting that Nebraska 1st District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry was raising money for a legal defense fund with claims he is facing federal prosecution.

KLIN News reached out to Fortenberry’s camp and received this reply:

“It’s been previously reported that the FBI investigated an effort by a foreign national to illegally funnel money to U.S. political campaigns, including Rep. Fortenberry’s. The people involved in that scheme were prosecuted and no charges were filed against him. This legal expense trust was established in part to address costs associated with that investigation. Rep. Fortenberry never saw or approved the language on that website.”

The headline on that fundraising page stated the FBI is using its unlimited power to prosecute Fortenberry on a bogus charge. This had to do with illegal campaign contributions made by a Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire to a number of Republicans in Congress, including Fortenberry.

Axos states that a fundraising page was set up by Fortenberry but was quickly removed. They stated that fund was set up on August 27th.
