It seems that Lincoln and southeast Nebraska aren’t quite finished with winter weather this week, as forecasts predict more potential snowfall and plummeting temperatures.

After a snow emergency spanned Monday and Tuesday and brought several inches of snow, Wednesday will bring a 20% chance of snow in the afternoon.

“If we get the snow tomorrow, it would probably be less than an inch,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Van DeWald told KLIN News.

Low temperatures could bottom out around 12°F Wednesday night, with some gusty winds. DeWald says this will set up the area for a 40% chance of snowfall Thursday.

“Thursday afternoon into Thursday night, snow could accumulate in the 2-4 inch range,” said DeWald, adding that Thursday night lows could be around 3°F with blustery winds as high as 37 mph, “Certainly we’re deep in the heart of winter now and we’re not going to get rid of the snow for a while.”

DeWald then gave an unwelcome warning looking toward the weekend, “Our temperatures are taking a nosedive here.”

Friday will carry a 40% chance of snow, “High temperatures are only about 10°F… and it gets worse from there. Friday night lows maybe around -7°F below zero, and lows Saturday night maybe around -13°F below zero.”

Saturday could also carry a chance of snowfall, mainly in the afternoon. That chance carries into Sunday, however it will be partly sunny, breaking out of the negatives with a high temperature near 1°F. Sadly, temperatures will return Sunday night to a low around -12°F.

“The cold temperatures this weekend are a significant concern. If anytime we get the wind chills 20 to 30 below zero or even colder, that can cause frostbite in a short amount of time,” warned DeWald, “Folks will definitely need to do whatever they can do to stay warm and stay indoors if they can.”
