Over the past decade, a coalition of families, advocates, and state legislators have worked for medical cannabis policy reform here in Nebraska… and now Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM) 2024 campaign is surpassing past efforts, and officials are optimistic.
“We’re feeling very good,” NMM Campaign Manager Crista Eggers told KLIN News, “One thing we learned from our last go around, is that you can never have enough time.”
NMM launched its this years initiative in July, and will be collecting signatures until July 3rd, 2024. This appeared to be NMM’s most successful attempt to put the issue before voters so far. A graphic was shared via a recent campaign update —
“We know that people support this overwhelmingly. So with time on our side, we filed early, we got out there, and we’re collecting signatures with volunteers all across the state in different counties,” said Eggers, “We are excited to report that we currently have 16 counties qualified, with our collected overall signatures at about 50,000.”
NMM will need to qualify 38 of the 93 counties with 5% of registered voters signing the petition to place the issue son the ballot.
“We’re feeling confident as we come to the end of the year, we’re not stopping, and plan to really launch the campaign in the spring,” said Eggers, exuding optimism, “With the momentum we have right now, and the progress compared to where we’ve been at the same time in years past, I’m feeling very optimistic”
Eggers encourages Nebraskans interested in the effort not to wait.
“Don’t wait till the last minute. Don’t make us beg for you to come out and sign,” she said, offering their website, nebraskamarijuana.org, for more information.
NMM will submit collected signatures to the Secretary of State’s office at 5:00 p.m. on July 3, 2024, and if successful, the legalization of medical cannabis will go before Nebraska voters on the November 5, 2024 general election ballot.
