Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews were sent to Sunset Inn and Suites near the Lincoln around 6:00 Sunday morning. LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says when crews arrived they found a mattress on fire in one of the rooms. There was also smoke damage in the hallway.
Lierman says careless smoking by a person staying in the room caused the fire. Crews were able to quickly extinguish it and the hotel was ventilated by LFR crews. She says there was no working smoke detector in the room.
Damage is estimated at $10,000 and the tenant was issued a citation for negligent smoking.
