Now that the holiday season is underway many people will be purchasing gifts and having them delivered.  Lincoln Police say it’s also the time of year when porch pirates look to steal those packages.  “17 percent of all package thefts in Lincoln happen in December and 20% occur on Thursdays,” says LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas.

“That’s why the Lincoln Police Department is asking residents to be vigilant about tracking orders and deliveries to avoid this crime of opportunity.” LPD is providing some tips shoppers can follow to prevent becoming a victim.

Thomas says take advantage of tracking capabilities on orders and deliveries, from time of purchase to time of delivery.  “Some companies offer text or email updates to track a package’s location. Follow these alerts to pick up your package off the porch and take it inside immediately or coordinate with a trusted friend or neighbor to pick it up for you.”

You can also have packages delivered to a secure locker or another location. Amazon, UPS, and FedEx all have alternate locations available. Thomas says porch lock boxes are also available for purchase. “These can be installed on your porch or front door area to allow a delivery person to place items inside the box. It then locks and requires a key to open.”

You can also select a specific delivery date through the shipping company to ensure someone is home to accept the package.
