Lincoln Northwest High School Approaching Capacity, Closing Transfers

By Chase Porter Nov 29, 2023 | 1:15 PM

To address over crowding in the Lincoln Public School system, particularly at the high school level, Lincoln Northwest High opened in the fall of 2022. Now Northwest High is itself, full.

LPS Officials initially projected that the building would reach a design capacity of 1,000 students within three to four years. Current enrollment at Northwest High exceeds 900 students. If 2024-25 ninth grade enrollment in 2023-24 duplicates this upcoming school year, Northwest will approach 1,100 students, roughly 10% over capacity… approximately the same over capacity percentage of Lincoln High and East, which spurred Northwest’s inception.

This projection for the 2024-25 school year has prompted LPS officials to offer prudent advice for parents, wishing to transfer their kids into Northwest High.

The Lincoln Board of Education voted to approve closing Lincoln High and East to transfers at a meeting on September 12th. Lincoln Public Schools will continue to allow incoming ninth grade students to choose what high school they would like to enroll in, however if your student is outside the attendance area of Northwest High, parents must turn in a High School Choice Form by January 31st.

The Board is set to hold a second consideration of this measure, and vote on it at the next regular meeting. To apply for a district transfer, visit lps.org.
