Lincoln Police say two off-duty officers were injured while assisting at the scene of a crash on Highway 43 and Saltillo Road around 7:15 Wednesday night. Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says an eastbound Toyota Avalon ran a stop sign and struck a northbound pickup.  The Avalon became disabled in the roadway.

Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow says officers Brent Lovett and Kate Schwenke were in separate vehicles and stopped to assist the Avalon driver.  A passing vehicle then struck them and the Toyota while on the side of the road.

Lovett was taken to the hospital and is being treated for serious head and abdominal injuries.  Schwenke was treated and released for an ankle injury.   The Avalon driver was also taken to a Lincoln hospital with serious injuries.  The sheriff’s department says alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash and a citation will be issued at a later date.

Morrow says both officers have been on the force for nearly eight years.  “The heroic actions of Officers Lovett and Schwenke highlight their dedication to their profession and the people of this community, one they have sworn to protect. Their willingness to assist those in need, without hesitation and even when not in uniform, showcases their bravery, integrity and steadfast commitment to serving others.”
