Lincoln Police have identified the Chicago man they say stabbed an officer in the neck Tuesday morning at the Lincoln Bus Depot near 52nd and Superior. Police Chief Michon Morrow says Simon Kafka didn’t have a ticket and refused to get off the bus.

When officers arrived, they encountered Kafka in the rear of the bus that had 20 other passengers on board.  Morrow says Kafka refused the officers orders to leave the bus and lunged at an officer, stabbing him in the neck.   She says Kafka then tried to grab the officer’s gun and was shot by a by a second officer.

“He is still currently in the hospital being treated for the gunshot wound,” Morrow says.  “Once he is released he will face charges of first degree assault on an officer and use of a weapon to commit a felony.”

Morrow says the wounded officer went home yesterday afternoon and is doing well.  She’s hoping he can return to duty in the near future.
