If you’re looking for a Halloween costume for your child, Lincoln Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer MJ Lierman has some advice.  “Make sure they’re non-flammable materials.  With candles being in jack-o-lanterns on front porches make sure there is no trailing fabric that can catch on fire.”

Lierman says teach your child the stop, drop and roll method in case the costume catches fire.  She also encourages homeowners to not use open flame candles in jack-o-lanterns. “Use glow sticks or battery operated candles instead.”

Lierman says be careful with decorations, including cornstalks that can easily catch fire and spread.  Also keep a close eye on fire pits. “If it’s windy a little ember can ignite somewhere and with the fall leaves and the dryness grass fires can take over.”
