Lincoln Police say a 27-year-old man from Chicago stabbed an officer at the Lincoln Bus Depot near 52nd and Superior around 12:15 Tuesday morning before being shot by another officer. Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow says the man did not have a ticket or money to buy one and refused to get off the bus.
“The man failed to comply with officers orders to get off the bus and began arguing and fighting with them in the back of the bus,” Morrow says. “The suspect then pulled a knife and lunged at one of our officers, striking him in the neck.”
Morrow says the man tried to grab the officer’s gun before a second officer shot the suspect one time. She says the officer and suspect were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 20 other passengers were on the bus, but were not hurt. Once the man is released from the hospital, Morrow says he will be taken to the Lancaster County Jail to face charges of first-degree assault on an officer and the use of a weapon to commit a felony.
The officer shot shot the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer involved shooting. “I am grateful for our officers’ bravery and am proud of LPD’s swift and courageous response in a difficult situation that undoubtedly saved others from injury,” Morrow says. She visited the officer in the hospital Tuesday morning and says he is in good spirits.
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird issued a statement following the incident. “When one of our officers is injured in the line of duty, the impact is felt by our entire community. We are
reminded of the incredible risks our officers take every day as they put their lives on the line to protect us. “I am grateful for the service and sacrifices made by our officers and their
families, and on behalf of our entire community, I extend my thoughts and support to our injured team member and family during their recovery.”
LPD released two officer body camera images from inside the bus.
