A recent surge in auto-thefts in Lincoln has prompted the police to offer advice on how to avoid becoming the next victim.
LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas reported that over the last weekend, officers responded to 18 instances of car theft… with 9 additional attempts. Thomas this weekends activity was focused in the southeast part of town, however these crimes are occurring across the city.
Specifically, Hyundai and Kia vehicles, model years 2011 to 2017 are disproportionately being targeted. Thomas, “So this is a reminder, if you haven’t gotten the antitheft protection software update for your vehicle, contact your dealer.”
General guidance from the department includes:
- Always lock your vehicle.
- Secure or hide valuables inside the car.
- Do not leave spare keys or weapons inside.
- Close all garage doors.
- If parking outside, do so in a well lit area.
- As we head into the colder months, do not leave your car running unlocked and unattended as it’s warming up.
