It was 70 years ago when the Korean War ended. On Thursday morning at the State Capitol Governor Jim Pillen signed a proclamation recognizing Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. “Nebraska is proud to be home to thousands of Korean War veterans, who bravely served in the defense of freedom and continue to be a true inspiration to all today as they were during the Korean War.”

Several Korean War veterans attended the ceremony.  There are more than 5,000 veterans living in the state today.  More than 300 Nebraskans never returned home.  “If we need to look top see whether or not this was worth it, we need to look no further than the Korean people,”  says Dan Ryberg with the Nebraska chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association.   “As a result of your sacrifices, they have built one of the most economically stable countries in the world.”

Pillen was also joined by John Hilgert, who is the the director of the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
