Several hundred people gathered outside the Hall of Justice at 10 a.m. to remember the legacy of LPD Investigator Mario Herrera. The Beyond the Call of Duty – End of Watch trailer was on display. The group is based out of Washington state and is designed to visit communities across the country.
Founder Jagrut Shah says the trailer has 339 photos of fallen officers displayed. They will be on tour for 84 days and making 194 stops nationwide. Lincoln is close to the end of their trek making the Capitol City the 182nd stop.
Shah says, “We go around the nation honoring officers that died in the line of duty the year before. We are going to their departments and letting the survivors know their loved ones will not be forgotten. As well as letting departments know their loss is being felt across the nation and not in just one location, one town, or one town or state.”
The trailer was escorted by about two dozen motorcycle officers from Washington and local agencies. The line was long as people gathered in front of the building to take a turn walking in front of the trailer to view the photo of Herrera.
Acting Chief Brian Jackson said, “We are approaching the one year anniversary of the death of of Investigator Mario Herrera, a death that the Lincoln Police Department will not forget and our community won’t forget either. His memory is still fresh in the minds of all of our staff. He won’t be forgotten here. We are reminded of him every day. It is emotional and good for our staff to be present at events like this and honor his memory.”
Investigator Herrera was shot in the line of duty on August 26, 2020 and died on September 7th. His family also attended today’s event along with many family members, friends and community supporters.
