University of Nebraska students could be paying more in tuition for the 2023-24 school year.   During a Board of Regents meeting Wednesday morning administrators said they will propose a 3.5% tuition increase next year.

At UNL that would amount to a $9 increase per credit hour, or another $270 for 30 credit hours. At UNO the proposal would result in an $8 increase per credit hour, which would be $240 for 30 credit hours.

At the Kearney campus there would be a $7 increase per credit hour, or $210 for the school year.   Chris Kabourek is Senior Vice President for Business and Finance and says compared to other Big Ten Schools the system wide cost is a bargain.

“Nebraska has the lowest tuition in the Big Ten at this point, so when you hear two other Big Ten institutions increasing tuition two, three, four percent on dollar magnitude, most of their students are paying more out of pocket than students at Nebraska.”

If the Board of Regents approve a tuition increase the university will still be looking at a more than $27-million budget shortfall for the 2023-24 fiscal year.  The next meeting is scheduled for June 22.
