Lincoln Police say extra officers and state troopers will be patrolling “O” Street this Memorial Day weekend to prevent another tragedy from happening.
Last year two women were killed and about 20 others who injured as they gathered on sidewalks watch cars cruising up and down the street. A car traveling at a high rate of speed struck another vehicle, killing the driver and passenger. One of the vehicles then careened into the crowd of spectators.
“You will see an increased law enforcement presence, both Lincoln Police and Nebraska State Patrol,” says assistant Police Chief Jason Stille. He says there will be about two dozen officers on the ground and they will be assisted by the NSP helicopter. Other measurers will also be taken.’
“We have partnered with a number of businesses to barricade several lots in the 48th to 52nd Street corridor. We are trying to limit congregation in that area.”
Police will also be working with LTU to monitor and alter signal timing from 9 p.m. to midnight to increase traffic flow in the area. “We will also be out trying to ensure that it is a safe environment.” Stille says they want to prevent racing, excessive and tire burnouts.
