There will be more Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies on the roadways this weekend as part of the nationwide “Click It Or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement effort. From May 24 through June 04 the deputies will be participating in the mobilization through high visibility enforcement and saturation patrol.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says it will begin Wednesday afternoon. “We’re going to do our safety check at 98th and Highway 6 and we’ll be checking for paperwork and making sure people are wearing their seatbelts.”
Houchin says deputies will be randomly stopping vehicles to make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt and children are properly restrained. Following the safety checkpoint, the deputies will continue enforcement efforts on an individual basis from 8:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.
Beginning Friday, May 26 and continuing through Sunday, June 4 the sheriff’s office will have additional deputies working on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The additional deputies will be used for saturation patrol to enforce traffic law violations throughout Lancaster County in marked patrol cars from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
Overtime for the additional deputies working during the mobilization will be paid through a mini-grant funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
