This is the last week of school for LPS students. During the summer break, the Food Bank of Lincoln making sure kids have access to food. The federally-funded, state-administered Summer Food Service Program aims to provide nutritious meals to children in low-income areas during the summer months when school is not in session.
“It provides kids 18 years and younger free breakfast and lunch,” says Food Bank spokesperson Alynn Sampson. They will be operating 31 different sites at various elementary, middle and high schools.
“It will be a cold breakfast and then a hot lunch,” Samson says. “It could be a hamburger or a hotdog. Sometimes we’ll do sandwiches or some sort of casserole and then they’ll get fresh fruit, veggies and milk.”
She says when school is out during the summer months, many children no longer have access to even one nutritious meal each day. The summer program helps fill the gap. This year’s program will be available from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, August 11.
