The Lancaster County Sheriff’s office says a man who barricaded himself inside a home near 28th and Holdrege killed himself early Thursday morning.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says Lincoln Police first went to the house around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon after the 49-year-old man made threats against a city department and nearby school to someone he knew.  That person then reported the threats to police.

Houchin says LPD learned the man had a protection order violation and a search warrant was obtained.  The department’s SWAT Team was  sent to the home around midnight and negotiated with the man for several hours, but Houchin says he was uncooperative.

“They did force entry eventually into the residence, but the individual would not come out. At approximately 4:49 a.m. they did hear a single gunshot in the residence.”

Houchin says officers then went in and found the man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.  No one else was in the house and an autopsy will be performed.

Houchin says this is considered an in-custody death and the sheriff’s office will be leading the investigation.
