If you’re doing some spring cleaning and come across household chemicals you no longer want the Lancaster County Health Department will be holding two free drive-thru hazardous waste collection events.

The first one will be held at the Hickman Fire Station on Friday from 2 to 6 p.m.  On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. residents can drop off chemicals  at Star City Shores at 4375 S. 33rd Ct in Lincoln.

“If you don’t need it or you don’t want it anymore just bring it in to one of our collections,” says Ralph Martin, Senior Environmental Health Specialist with the health department.

Accepted items include pesticides, lawn and garden chemicals, household cleaning products, paint thinners, polishes and waxes, turpentine, oil-based paint, pool cleaning chemicals, flea and tick powders, rodent poison, charcoal starter fluids,  old gasoline and items containing mercury such as CFLs and thermometers.

Martin says they can’t accept latex paint, motor oil, antifreeze, fertilizers, gas grill cylinders, medicines and pharmaceutical waste, electronics, firearms, ammunition, and batteries.

If you can’t make it to either drop-off Martin says HazToGo, Lincoln’s Hazardous Waste Center at 5101 N. 48th Street, is open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the third Saturday each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Business waste is not handled at these events.
