The Nebraska Community Blood Bank says they are in need of people to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life. Community Outreach Represenative Kari Lundeen tells KLIN News they have issued a blood emergency.
“What we’re looking at is less than two day supply of , specifically, Type O blood and platelets.” She says they have had fewer donors due to recent winter storms, the cold and flu season and fewer donors giving for their first time.
She says blood donations aren’t needed for just trauma patients.” There’s patients in our hospitals who are fighting cancer, premature babies and mothers who have just given birth. All of these patients need blood every single day, so we have to have loyal donors continue to come in,” Lundeen says.
She tells KLIN News it’s also important that people who have never given blood before step up and help their community. “Nearly one in three individuals are going to need blood in their lifetime and because someone gave us thirty minutes of their day, your loved one got a chance at life.
