Parents Of Student Who Brought Gun To Lincoln School Won’t Be Charged

By Tom Stanton Mar 3, 2023 | 3:49 PM

The Lincoln Police Department has concluded its investigation into an incident one week ago where a 10-year-old student was found with a loaded  handgun at Prescott Elementary School.

LPD says the investigation revealed insufficient probable cause to cite the parents of the boy who brought the weapon to school.  Investigators say  measures were in place to secure the weapon, including a cable gunlock, in the home but the child was still able to gain access to it.

LPS superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman says a student approached a Prescott Elementary staff member on February 24 and reported another student had shown them a gun and made “concerning comments about violence” toward them.  School administrators found the student’s backpack and brought it to the office. Lincoln Police were called and officers found the gun in the backpack.

“We would like to thank our partners at Lincoln Public Schools for their prompt response and to the student who initially reported the incident to LPS staff,” Lincoln Police said in a statement.
