The Big Ten Conference announced season awards for baseball Sunday where Nebraska was well represented with top honors
Head coach Will Bolt was named Coach of the Year after leading the Huskers to a conference title in his first full season at the helm.
Taking conference awards for players included junior infielder/right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach taking Big Ten Player of the Year. He is the first Husker to take the Big Ten honor and first to be named conference player of the year since Alex Gordon won the Big 12 award in 2005.
Schwellenbach batted third in the order, started every game at shortstop, and served as the team’s closer. He ends the regular season ranked in the top 10 in the league in runs (41), RBIs (35), walks (28), while in the field he has committed just three errors in 168 chances. He is third in the Big Ten with nine saves as he took the hill for 25.1 innings with a 0.71 ERA.
Max Anderson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He’s the fifth Husker in program history to be named freshman of the year. The third baseman is second on the team and eighth in the league with a batting average of .337.
The Big Ten also named All-Bit Ten teams, where four Huskers were named first-team: Schwellenbach (relief pitcher), Luke Roskam (catcher), Jaxon Hallmark (outfielder) and Cade Povich (starting pitcher). Anderson earned second-team honors and was named to the All-Freshman team along with Brice Matthews.
Nebraska earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with their Big Ten title. The NCAA Selection Show is Monday at 11 am on ESPN2.
