The Catholic Diocese of Lincoln is partnering with Catholic Social Services for a Thanksgiving food distribution event Friday, Nov. 18. The food basket giveaway will take place at the Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska offices at 2241 O St from 9 AM to noon and again from 1 to 4 PM in the name of fighting food insecurity. Katie Patrick, Executive Director of Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska, told KLIN News how “food insecurity” differs from “hunger.”
“We prefer to use ‘food insecurity’ rather than hunger, because in our community, there are a variety of different agencies and different ways that families who are in need of food can go get that food for free or at low cost,” said Patrick. “But what is happening is that the food that is free or the food that is available to them oftentimes does not have that nutritional value.
So, they might be getting a lot of items that aren’t high in protein or the different nutrients that a family or an individual really needs to thrive and to grow.”
The food baskets the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln and the Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska will be distributing will come with all the fixings of a traditional Thanksgiving meal, along with milk and eggs for good measure. While deadlines to be on the receiving and volunteering side of things have come and gone, something similar will be taking place before the Christmas season.
