LES Issues Scam Alert

By Michael Wheeler Nov 1, 2022 | 4:38 PM

Lincoln Electric System has received multiple reports from customers of an increase in scams within the LES service area. The organization says customers should be alert and aware of what the scammers are trying to do.

According to LES, scammers threaten to disconnect power unless customers make an immediate payment via Zelle. Sometimes, the scammer may even dictate to their victim how to set up the payment system. Other methods involve automated “robo” calls, spoofing phone numbers, and requesting payment by gift cards or prepaid debit cards.

LES urges the public to keep the following in mind:

  • LES will never contact you by phone, threaten to disconnect service, or ask for immediate payment. LES uses disconnect notices and reminders on bills for delinquent accounts, door hangers for service terminations, and emails or text alerts for those who opt-in.
  • No legitimate utility will ask for gift cards, prepaid cards or money transfers as forms of payment.
  • Maintain good cyber hygiene by avoiding suspicious emails, especially ones that ask you to do something right away or require personal information. Avoid using public wi-fi when conducting sensitive activities online.
  • LES does not use automated “robo” calls requesting customers call back to make a payment.
  • LES will only ask for account information to confirm your identity when you call the customer care center. Never give your financial or account information to someone who calls or emails you.

If a call seems suspicious, hang up and do not give any information. Report it to the attorney general’s office immediately. If you provided information, call the police department’s non-emergency telephone number to report the scam.
