Lincoln Police are excavating the basement of a home near 68th and Burlington streets as part of the investigation into Regina Bos’ disappearance, a case that has remained unsolved for more than 25 years. Investigators are searching for possible human remains, but police have not confirmed a discovery.

Police spokesperson Erika Thomas told KLIN News that crews began working at the property around 9 a.m. Thursday. An excavating crew, crime scene investigators from Lincoln Police and the Nebraska State Patrol, and members of LPD’s criminal investigations unit are involved in the search.

Thomas said investigators have established a connection between the property and the case, but she did not explain the nature of that connection. The current homeowner is cooperating with investigators and allowing them to search the basement. “Our crews are making sure that they preserve any evidence,” Thomas said. “We also are working with a UNL anthropologist on scene who will help make a determination if any remains are found what the nature of those remains are.”

Thomas emphasized that investigators do not know whether the search will uncover anything. She said finding Bos and providing answers for her family remain the department’s priorities. “And of course, you know the most important person in this case is Regina and our goal is to hopefully ultimately find her and bring some closure to her family,” Thomas said.

Despite the time that has passed, Thomas said the investigation remains active. She encouraged anyone with information, regardless of how insignificant it might seem, to contact Lincoln Police. “Tips are how we are able to work leads and and see if we can make new developments in cases,” Thomas said.
