With the Nov. 3 general election less than a month away, the Nebraska Department of Transportation is reminding residents that political campaign signs cannot be placed on state highway or interstate rights of way. The restriction applies to all signs, including those placed at intersections, in medians, along entrance and exit ramps, on sidewalks and in roadside ditches.
NDOT maintenance crews will remove improperly placed signs and temporarily store them at maintenance yards across the state, where owners can reclaim them. The department did not specify how long the signs would be kept.
Counties and municipalities may have additional rules governing campaign sign placement and size. NDOT advises residents to check local regulations before placing signs, noting that violations of local sign ordinances may result in fines.
Residents with questions about state right-of-way boundaries or sign permits can contact their local NDOT district permit officer. The Lincoln district office can be reached at 402-471-0850, and NDOT’s Right-of-Way Division can be reached at 402-479-4463.
