Lincoln Fire and Rescue is using Fire Prevention Week to remind residents about the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and everyday charging devices. LFR Public Information Officer  MJ Lierman says this year’s national theme focuses on safe charging and encourages families to make simple changes at home.

She says children should not charge devices in beds or on couches. Instead, charging devices should be placed on a hard, flat surface. Lierman also recommends using the proper charging cord for each device and replacing cords that are frayed or damaged.

Lierman says LFR is not necessarily seeing more battery-related fires, but the number of rechargeable devices in homes creates more opportunities for problems. “With the amount of devices out there, there’s a lot that can happen if you’re not charging safely.”

Lierman says residents should use UL-listed chargers designed for their specific devices and pay attention to batteries or devices that become unusually hot, damaged or begin smoking. The reminders apply to everything from toys and electric toothbrushes to power tools, vacuums, electric scooters and e-bikes.

Fire Prevention Week runs through October 10th, but Lierman says LFR will continue fire-safety activities throughout October, including school visits, demonstrations and community events.
