The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department is reporting the first death from West Nile virus in the county this season. Health officials say a person in their 60s died from the virus. Seven West Nile cases have been reported in Lancaster County this summer, with four people requiring hospitalization.
This was first West Nile death in Lancaster County since 2023. West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The Health Department says mosquitoes remain active until around the first frost.
Residents are encouraged to use EPA-registered insect repellent, limit time outdoors around dusk and dawn, and wear long sleeves, pants, shoes and socks when outside. Health officials also recommend eliminating standing water around homes, including in birdbaths, pet bowls, buckets, tires and other containers.
