The group behind the Respect Nebraska Voters initiative says it will challenge in court the Nebraska Secretary of State’s decision not to place the proposed constitutional amendment on the November 2026 statewide ballot.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen rejected the initiative after determining it does not meet the Nebraska Constitution’s single-subject requirement, following concerns raised by a group of state senators. In a statement, Respect Nebraska Voters says it disagrees with the decision, saying the initiative was carefully drafted and reviewed to comply with constitutional requirements and legal precedent.

The group says more than 186,000 Nebraskans from every county signed the petition. Respect Nebraska Voters says it will continue its legal challenge and expects the initiative will ultimately be placed on the November ballot.

The group says the proposed amendment is intended to further protect Nebraskans’ lawmaking powers from legislative interference.
