Capital Humane Society is hoping to place dozens of animals in new homes during a one-day adoption event Saturday.

The organization will participate in the nationwide “Clear the Shelters” campaign from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, August 22, at the Pieloch Pet Adoption Center, 6500 South 70th Street.

The Abel Foundation and NEBCO are sponsoring adoption fees for all animals available through Capital Humane Society that day. The offer covers dogs, cats and small animals, including rabbits and guinea pigs.

Capital Humane Society President and CEO Matt Madcharo said the campaign is designed to promote pet adoption and reduce shelter populations.

“This is a national campaign that happens every August to promote pet adoption and get pets out of shelters,” Madcharo said. “This will be our tenth year in a row participating in Clear the Shelters.”

More than 150 animals were available for adoption as the organization prepared for the event, according to Madcharo. The available animals include dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and other small pets.

“All pets that are up for adoption are listed on our website,” Madcharo said. “Right now, we have just over 150 pets that are available for adoption.”

Although the standard adoption fees are being sponsored, adopters will remain responsible for any applicable rabies, licensing or deposit charges.

Adoption interactions will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prospective adopters should bring photo identification and all family members who will share the home with the animal.

Animals currently available for adoption can be reviewed at CapitalHumaneSociety.org.

The Pieloch Pet Adoption Center will be closed Sunday, August 23, following the event.
